Reuse of ramps delivers full marks in sustainability
Since 2023, the Social Services Department’s housing adaptation unit and the Urban Development Department’s property management service have collaborated on the dismantling and reuse of ramps. The result is a model that promotes environmental, social, and economic sustainability, as well as faster case processing.
Housing adaptation is a municipal cash grant that is, among other things, awarded for the installation of ramps at entrances for you as a resident of the municipality. Instead of discarding ramps when they are no longer needed, they are now taken back and reused to meet new needs.
During the first three years, the new way of working has enabled the reuse of a total of 49 ramps for new users. Since the property management service is a work training initiative, this collaboration creates meaningful occupation and valuable work experience. Increased reuse generates environmental benefits and has also reduced the municipality’s ramp costs by as much as 80 percent, despite sharp increases in ramp prices.
By reusing existing ramps from the municipality’s own storage, case officers can offer a fast and cost-effective solution for new applications. This results in lower purchasing costs for the municipality and shorter waiting times for applicants.
THIS IS HOW HOME ADAPTATION WITH RAMPS WORKS
The applicant is offered a used ramp, and installation is carried out by a contractor selected by the grant applicant.
When a ramp is to be reclaimed because the user no longer needs it, Property Management Services is contacted. They are responsible for dismantling, transportation, and storage in the municipality’s warehouse.
