Mixed-age groups to be introduced at Heden´s school

Starting in the autumn term of 2026, mixed-age groups will be introduced at Heden´s School. The decision means there will be three groups combining preschool class (F) and Grade 1, and three groups combining Grades 2–3.

The background to this change in Heden concerns the school’s long-term conditions regarding student numbers, facilities, and finances. Current cohorts in preschool class (F) through Grade 3 consist of approximately 30 students per grade. The school’s classrooms are designed for 25 students. This means that:

  • a full grade cohort does not fit into a single classroom
  • at the same time, the cohort is too small to be sustainably divided into two fully viable parallel classes
  • the current organization requires more teaching groups than the long-term student base can support

What Are Mixed-Age Groups?

Mixed-age groups mean that students of different ages are taught in the same class. Instruction is adapted to each student’s knowledge level and needs. Group composition is planned with consideration for pedagogical balance, social relationships, a sense of security, and support needs. The aim is to create stable and well-functioning groups that promote a positive learning environment, academic development, and good working conditions.

The overall assessment is that transitioning to mixed-age groups will enable a stable organization while maintaining fundamental quality standards. The analysis has focused in particular on instructional quality, students in need of additional support or enrichment, as well as safety and a calm learning environment.

How Will the Work Proceed?

Student projections and facility conditions have been reviewed, along with a legal assessment in accordance with the Education Act. Local and central risk and impact analyses have been conducted, as well as consultations under the Co-Determination Act (MBL). During the spring term, staff will work systematically with planning and quality assurance in preparation for the autumn term of 2026.

Continued quality after implementation will be ensured through:

  • clear and structured instruction in reading, writing, and mathematics
  • adaptations to ensure all students work at an appropriate level
  • additional support in F–1 and early special education interventions
  • strong adult presence

After implementation, the organization will be evaluated and adjusted if necessary.

The goal is for Hedens School to continue to be a safe and stable school where every student is given the best possible conditions to develop to their fullest potential.
