Ikoner opens – an exhibition about being seen and taking space

Rose and Jack on the deck of the Titanic, Barbie in her pink house, or a prime minister addressing the nation. Most of us recognize these scenes, but in Icons, they are portrayed by people who rarely get to take part in these kinds of stories.

The exhibition features 21 models from across Sweden. They share ambitions, dreams, and Down syndrome. Through these portraits, the exhibition aims to create greater understanding of our differences and show that everyone has a natural place in society.

Diversity year 2026

The exhibition is part of Boden Municipality’s Diversity Year 2026 initiative, where different activities and events throughout the year focus on inclusion and diversity.

As Icons comes to Boden, it continues the conversation about equal human value, the right to work, and the importance of representation. Throughout the summer, Stadsparken will become a place for reflection, meetings, and stories that move people.

The exhibition opens on May 25 at 6:00 PM in Stadsparken. The evening will feature a festive opening ceremony together with Funkisscenen. The exhibition will be on display until July 31.

Real participation matters

Throughout the summer, staff and participants from work and activity services will be on site in Stadsparken to guide visitors and assist with practical tasks connected to the exhibition. Before taking on these roles, participants receive training to help them feel confident in their assignments.

Young people from adapted upper secondary school will also have the opportunity to work during the exhibition period, including at the summer café Café 2:an. At the same time, summer jobs through the firewood service initiative are being offered for the third year in a row.

The initiative creates opportunities for young people and participants to gain work experience, meet new people, and strengthen their self-confidence.

“It is important that participants get to be part of society, contribute, and feel included. As we usually say, real participation matters,” says Susanne Rosenius, Head of Work and Activity Services.

The photography exhibition Icons is the result of a unique collaboration between Fotografiska Museum and Glada Hudik Theatre. The production team includes Helena Andersson and Linda Sandberg (concept and design), Emma Svensson (photography), Pär Johansson (artistic director, Glada Hudik Theatre), Pauline Benthede (Global Exhibitions Manager, Fotografiska), and Per Braman (founder of Fotografiska).
