Boden Receives 25 Million from the Swedish Food Agency

Today, the Swedish Food Agency announced that it has awarded funding to the Municipality of Boden under the priority area "Foundations for Total Defence." One of the requirements was that applicants already had a local action plan in place and were able to begin implementation and use the funding within one year.

"This allocation makes it possible to complete important measures that are already underway or planned more quickly. These efforts strengthen both Sweden's preparedness and NATO's collective defence," says Christina Nordin, Director General of the Swedish Food Agency.

The funding is part of the Spring Amending Budget, which was recently approved by the Swedish Parliament. The priority is based on the document "Foundations for Total Defence 2025–2030," which outlines the planning assumptions and preparedness principles that all organisations within Sweden's total defence system should follow. In addition, recipients were required to have an established local action plan and be able to initiate work and utilise the funding within one year.

Together with other measures being implemented at both the local and national levels, these initiatives strengthen society's overall ability to respond to a wide range of situations, including the capacity to provide Host Nation Supportto Sweden's NATO allies.

For the Municipality of Boden, this funding demonstrates how targeted national investments enable the rapid and effective implementation of measures to strengthen resilience. As a relatively small municipality undergoing significant societal transformation, Boden has already demonstrated strong leadership, organisational capability, and innovation in response to a changing security environment.

"These initiatives are entirely linked to Sweden's total defence, but for the residents of Boden they also mean stronger capacity in everyday life, during crises, and in times of war—without placing additional pressure on the municipal budget or on residents' water and wastewater fees," says Carl Bernin Ortwed, Head of the Water and Waste Department at the Municipality of Boden.

Because the timeframe for using the Swedish Food Agency's funding is limited, the Municipality of Boden will begin work immediately. The programme will include both additional personnel resources and procured services, with a rapid implementation phase carried out within the framework of the funding over the coming year.
