Keep track of the wildfire risk this summer
You should always be careful when using fire outdoors, whether you are using a camping stove, a portable barbecue or a fire pit. During dry conditions, it is especially important to be aware of the risk of fire.
Even if there is no fire ban in place, the wildfire risk in an area may still be high. Always take extra care when lighting fires in forests and the countryside. You can monitor the wildfire risk using the SMHI fire risk forecast External link. or the Brandrisk Ute app.
The Brandrisk Ute app
Brandrisk Ute is an app from the Swedish Civil Defence Agency (MCF) for members of the public. During spring and summer, it helps you keep track of wildfire risk and whether a fire ban is in force where you are.
With the Brandrisk Ute app, you can:
- Check the wildfire risk in your area
- Find out whether a fire ban is in force
- Get advice on how to light fires and barbecue safely
The app is available in both the App Store and Google Play, including an English-language version.
6 tips for safe outdoor fires
If there is no fire ban and you plan to light a fire outdoors, keep the following in mind:
1. Choose a safe location
Light your fire where it cannot spread to trees, bushes, grass or other combustible materials. Gravel or sand is the safest surface.
2. Keep the fire small
Surround the fire with stones or soil to prevent it from spreading.
3. Use a camping stove if possible
If you are cooking outdoors, a camping stove is often a safer option than an open fire.
4. Avoid lighting fires in windy conditions
Strong winds can carry sparks and start a wildfire.
5. Keep water nearby
Make sure you have water available so you can extinguish the fire quickly if necessary.
6. Extinguish the fire completely
Pour plenty of water over the fire and stir the ashes until all embers are out. Also check the ground around the fire site.
If a fire spreads – always call 112
Call 112 immediately. After raising the alarm, you can try to limit the spread of the fire until the emergency services arrive.
