Boden becomes a Generation Pep Municipality – inspiring healthier lives
Walk or cycle when you can, choose a healthier snack, or put your screen away and spend some time outdoors. Boden Municipality's long-term public health initiative aims to inspire healthier everyday choices. This year, Boden has become a Generation Pep Municipality, as part of a broader commitment to improving public health.
Generation Pep has been active for ten years and is a nationwide initiative that promotes healthier lifestyles for children and young people through increased physical activity and better eating habits.
Inspiring active lifestyles
As part of the Generation Pep network, municipalities receive free guidance, inspiration and practical tools to strengthen their public health work. Anna-Karin Isaksson is Public Health Strategist at Boden Municipality.
"We're seeing overweight and sedentary lifestyles affecting children at increasingly younger ages," she says. "That's why it's so important to establish healthy habits early in life and reduce the risk of health problems later on. Generation Pep encourages children and young people to be physically active and to make healthier food choices. Adults also have an important role to play by setting a good example."
Boden Municipality has long worked actively to promote healthy eating and physical activity in preschools and schools. The activity area at Sveafältet, together with the nature-inspired playgrounds in Sävast and Harads, are just a few examples of investments that encourage movement, play and social interaction.
Working together creates greater impact
The municipality now wants to broaden its ambitions further by integrating health, wellbeing and social connection into all aspects of community development.
"We take a long-term approach to inspiring residents to live healthier lives," says Anna-Karin. "A great deal is already happening, but we want to do even more."
The municipality sees civil society as an important partner and welcomes collaboration to support initiatives that promote health and wellbeing.
"We have many fantastic associations and organisations that contribute to better public health in our municipality," says Anna-Karin. "Together, we create added value. Becoming a Generation Pep Municipality is part of our broader commitment to building a healthier population in a growing Boden."
