Boden’s population passes 29,000
Boden continues to grow. For the first time since 1998, the Municipality of Boden has passed 29,000 residents. The increase is primarily being driven by strong inward migration.
Boden’s population has grown significantly over the past year. Following a longer period of slower population growth, the trend has turned upwards. The municipality has now passed 29,000 residents for the first time in 28 years.
“It is fantastic to see Boden continuing to grow and more people becoming part of our community. There is a great deal happening in Boden, and more and more people are discovering the opportunities and quality of life we have here. The fact that people are choosing to move to Boden is an important sign of this positive development,” says Béatrice Öman, Municipal Commissioner.
Inward migration is driving growth
Inward migration is the main driver behind the population increase. Boden has a positive net migration rate from the rest of Sweden and from other countries.
Part of this development is linked to the growing labour market and major industrial investments. At the same time, the Swedish Armed Forces are expanding their presence in Boden, which is also contributing to more people moving to the municipality.
Inward migration remains predominantly male, which can partly be linked to the industrial expansion and the large number of contractors working in the municipality.
More people of working age are needed
For Boden, a growing population is about more than the number itself. The municipality has an ageing population and needs more people of working age. This is important both to meet the labour market’s demand for skills and to ensure that public services can meet future needs. A major challenge remains the shortage of housing.
“Several developers have recently announced plans to build new housing in Boden, which is of course very positive and important for us. But as we continue to grow, housing, the labour market and public services all need to develop together. It is clear that we need more homes,” says Béatrice Öman.
The municipality’s goal is to grow to 33,000 residents. Passing 29,000 is therefore an important milestone along the way.
“It is wonderful to see that, for the first time since 1998, there are more than 29,000 people living in Boden. Now we need to continue creating a Boden where people want to live, work and build their lives – both those who already live here and those considering making Boden their home.”
