About special housing
Special housing, also called a care home, provides twenty-four-hour care and support. You pay rent, meals and a care fee according to the municipality’s rules.
What do pay for

Cost for | SEK/month | Comments |
|---|---|---|
Rent | – | Varies by residence. |
Meals | 5 245 | Monthly cost for meals. |
Care fee | up to 2 642 | Max your "ability-to-pay" |
Note! Fees are billed two months in arrears.
Explanation of the ability-to-pay amount
The ability-to-pay amount is the sum that can be used for the care fee after necessary costs have been deducted. It affects only the care fee. Rent and meals are set separately, but they are deducted in the calculation, which can lower the care fee.
The care fee is always the lower of your ability-to-pay amount and the maximum fee. If the ability-to-pay amount is zero or negative, no care fee is charged. If needed, a reduction can be assessed against the municipality’s guarantee amount.
Examples:
Ability-to-pay amount 800 SEK → care fee at most 800 SEK, even if the maximum fee is higher.
Ability-to-pay amount minus 100 SEK → 0 SEK care fee.

Element in the calculation | Effect |
|---|---|
Income after tax | Added |
Housing supplement or housing allowance | Added |
Household electricity and consumables | Added |
Housing cost | Deducted |
Individual additional costs | Deducted |
Minimum allowance | Deducted |
Explanation of the minimum allowance
The minimum allowance is a statutory protection amount for normal living expenses such as food, clothing, hygiene, telephone, home insurance, household items and leisure.
It is not a fee. It is deducted when we calculate your ability-to-pay amount so the care fee never pushes you below this level.
The amount is set annually and varies by age (sixty-five or older, or under sixty-five) and household type (single or married/cohabiting).
If you have reasonable additional costs, the protected amount can be increased, for example for higher food costs in the residence, trustee costs or other necessary expenses. The standard increase for that cost is 1,895 SEK per month for persons aged sixty-one or older.

Practical information
Submit information and apply for support
Submit your income information. Current pension and housing supplement data are retrieved from the Swedish Pensions Agency. Housing supplement and housing allowance are included when the income used for the fee is calculated.
Couples and cohabitants
For married couples or registered partners, incomes are combined and divided equally. The housing cost is also divided equally. For cohabitants who are not married, the fee is based on the individual’s income, but the housing cost is divided equally.
Invoicing and payment
Fees are billed two months in arrears.
