Fees for water and sewerage

As a customer of the municipal water and sewer system, you pay fees for water and wastewater services. The system is fully fee-financed and not profit-driven.

Updated:

Please note that all forms, digital applications (e-services) and some linked websites are currently in Swedish. Contact Citizen Service if you need help in English.

How the fees work

Water services are financed with two types of fees:

  • Annual fees for water and sewer (usage fees) – recurring charges that cover operation, maintenance, and investments in the network and treatment plants.
  • One-time connection fees (connection charges) – paid once when a property is connected to the network.

Water services are essential for a functioning society. The municipality produces drinking water, maintains the pipe network, treats wastewater, and manages stormwater. The operations are fully financed by fees and are non-profit. No tax funds are used.

Annual fees for water and sewer

When your property is connected to the municipal water and sewer system, you pay annual fees. These consist of a fixed basic fee, a fee based on the number of dwellings or property size, and a variable fee depending on how much water you use.

This shows the yearly cost for a dwelling connected to the municipal water and sewer network.

Other property

For properties other than housing, a land area fee is charged instead of a dwelling unit fee. It is based on property size.

Holiday homes and other facilities – annual costs

One-time connection fees (connection charges)

When a property is connected to the municipal water and sewer system, you pay a one-time fee. It covers the cost of connection, such as service pipes, connection points, land area, and number of dwellings. The fee depends on property size, number of pipes, and whether stormwater is connected.

Explanations of abbreviations in the table

  • W = Water (drinking water)
  • WW = Wastewater (household and business sewage)
  • Sf = Stormwater property (rain/meltwater from roofs, yards, driveways)
  • Sg = Stormwater street (rain/meltwater from streets and public areas)

Tip for homeowners: Costs may be higher if the service pipe is longer than 30 meters. An extra fee per meter is then added.

How to calculate your total cost

Want to know the total cost for connecting and using water and sewer?

Step 1 – Connection fee (one-time fee)
Add together:

  • Service pipe fee
  • Connection point fee (W, WW, Sf, Sg)
  • Land area fee (per m²)
  • Dwelling unit fee (per dwelling)
  • Any fee for stormwater without a connection point

Step 2 – Annual usage fees
Add:

  • Basic fee (per property)
  • Variable fee per m³ water used
  • Dwelling unit fee (per dwelling) or land area fee (for other property)

Step 3 – Extra costs if applicable

  • Long service pipe (over 30 meters)
  • Action fees (e.g., shut off/on, meter replacement)
  • Any stormwater fee

Result: Step 1 + Step 2 + any extras = your total cost.

Other property

For non-residential properties, other fees apply.

Other factors that may affect your fee

  • Stormwater for public areas: 0 SEK per m² in both connection and usage fees.
  • Long service pipe: Over 30 meters costs an additional 3,388 SEK per meter (incl. VAT).
  • Extra meter point or extra service pipe: Annual fee of 40% of the basic fee.

Measurement, billing and payment

  • Fees are billed in arrears.
  • The variable part is based on actual consumption or a standard amount if no meter is installed.
  • Late payment interest is charged according to law if the invoice is not paid on time.

Annual report for water and sewage

The municipality publishes a special annual income statement and balance sheet for water and sewage. The purpose is to give users the possibility to follow up that the cost-price principle is being followed.
