Walpurgis bonfire

Walpurgis bonfires are a valued tradition, but they must be built and lit in a safe way to protect both the environment and wildlife.

Public Walpurgis bonfires

For larger bonfires that are part of a public event you need:

  • a police permit for a public gathering,
  • the landowner’s approval.

The organiser is responsible for safety, for keeping the fire under supervision, for having fire-fighting equipment on site, and for cleaning the area within one week.

Small private bonfires

If you light a fire with family or neighbours, the rules for public events do not apply. However, you must still burn safely and show consideration for neighbours, animals and the environment.

What are you allowed to burn?

Only dry brushwood, twigs and clean wood may be placed on the bonfire.

It is always forbidden to burn waste – this includes for example:

  • painted or impregnated wood,
  • hardboard, chipboard and MDF,
  • plastic, rubber, textiles and tarpaulins,
  • electronics, cables and pipes,
  • waste oil and other chemical waste.

Such material must be taken to the recycling centre. When burned, it releases dangerous substances that can harm people, animals and nature.

Protect the hedgehogs

Piles of branches and brushwood are perfect hiding places for hedgehogs that may hibernate inside them. Move or check the bonfire before lighting it to make sure no animals are harmed.
