When is registration required?

If you only sell food on one-off occasions, such as at a market or a school event, you do not need to register your business. But if sales take place regularly, you must register your business with the municipality’s environment and building committee.

Even temporary businesses must handle food safely. Good hand hygiene, correct storage temperatures and clean work surfaces are always important.

How to register your business

To register a home-based food business, you submit a notification to the municipality. You are responsible for ensuring that the food is safe to eat. The municipality carries out regular inspections to check that requirements are met. In the Permit Guide, you can find a step-by-step guide to registering your business.

Premises

Your kitchen must be clean and in good condition. There must be running water for handwashing and cleaning. Adapt your business to the space you have.

Knowledge

You must have sufficient knowledge of food hygiene. You can gain this knowledge through courses, books or other information sources.

Handling and storage

Food must be handled in a way that prevents contamination. Keep ingredients for your business separate from the family’s food, and have clear routines for safe handling.

Labelling and allergies

If you sell packaged food, it must be correctly labelled. It must always be clear if the product contains anything that can cause allergies or intolerances.

Inspections and fees

Municipal inspectors make regular visits to check that your business follows the rules. Fees are charged for the inspections.

In case of illness

If you or someone in your household is ill, for example with stomach flu, you must not handle unpackaged food. Wait at least two days after recovery before starting again.

Pets

Pets must not be in the kitchen when food is prepared, handled or stored. This is especially important when food is unpackaged.
