Keeping hens

Keeping hens can be enjoyable, but in a planned residential area you need a permit from the municipality and you must follow certain rules.

Permit required

To keep hens in a planned residential area, you must apply to the municipality. In your application you must state, among other things, how many hens you plan to have, where the henhouse and the outdoor run will be located, and how the manure will be managed.

How to care for hens

Hens may not roam freely in the garden but must have an outdoor run. The run should have a roof to protect against predators.

Hens must be kept indoors at night.
Feeding should take place indoors to avoid attracting pests.
Manure must be managed so that neighbours are not disturbed by odour or flies. Peat bedding or similar material can be used to keep the manure dry.

When to notify Jordbruksverket

If you keep poultry on a larger scale, for example for commercial purposes or with many hen places, you must also notify Jordbruksverket (the Swedish Board of Agriculture).
