About the preschool
Örtavallen Preschool is located in Sävast, six kilometres from Boden. There are four groups for children aged one to five: Haren and Ekorren for younger children, and Björnen and Ugglan for older children. The preschool offers practice placements for student teachers from Luleå University of Technology and for childcare students from upper-secondary school and adult education.
Pedagogy and approach
Teaching is thematic and cross-curricular to develop children’s abilities. Priority goals are language and communication, social competence, and mathematics. Staff work with a positive, encouraging approach within clear boundaries, supporting learning and play individually and in groups. Play is central for imagination, empathy, communication, cooperation, problem-solving and symbolic thinking. Daily assemblies and activities strengthen language through conversation, read-aloud, songs, rhythm, stories, rhymes and chants. Weekly planning is done with children’s influence and values work; children practise turn-taking, speaking and listening. Learning environments are co-created to spark curiosity. Outdoor time provides varied challenges and builds motor skills such as running, jumping, climbing, balancing and swinging.
Safety and cooperation
Environments are designed together with the children to promote curiosity, wellbeing and sustained learning. Safety, care, joy, play, sustainability and respect shape daily life, with a strong focus on learning processes and children’s influence. Outdoor play adds space, sound and fresh air and supports health. The preschool works closely with guardians.
