About the preschool

BarnCompaniet has around 80 children aged 1–5. Children are grouped by age into Arenas: Air (1-year-olds), Water (2-year-olds), Earth (3-year-olds), and Fire (4–5-year-olds). The team includes two preschool heads, seventeen educators, and two cooks.

The preschool is located in the Erikslund neighbourhood, about 1.5 kilometres from the town centre, in a building that also houses health and social services. Outdoor surroundings include large green and wooded areas and nearby playgrounds, with good bus links.

BarnCompaniet is run as a staff- and parent-owned cooperative without profit. The board includes parents, educators and an external chair; preschool heads attend as adjunct members. Parent involvement is a key part of the operation.

Meals and food

Meals are cooked on site. The kitchen avoids processed foods, bakes its own soft bread, and aims for nutritious, low-sugar meals with high fibre and more polyunsaturated than saturated fat. Salad (about four varieties) is served before the main course. The preschool buys primarily from local suppliers and uses organic produce where possible. Menus vary, with Swedish home-style dishes as a base and influences from around the world. Children with allergies receive equivalent meals, and Swedish food traditions are valued.

Pedagogy and approach

The preschool is inspired by Reggio Emilia. Learning is inquiry-based and exploratory; children’s thoughts, ideas and imagination guide projects. Children are offered many forms of expression—the “hundred languages.” Pedagogical documentation makes learning visible for children and educators and supports reflection and planning.

Core values include each child’s right to recognition, the uniqueness of every child, diversity as a strength, and interdependence—learning with and from one another. The learning environment—indoors and outdoors—is intentionally designed, aesthetically inviting and varied, with rich materials and many learning spaces. The organisation is structured with the national preschool curriculum and shared values as its foundation.

Safety and cooperation

Small groups and clear structures create calm and security. The preschool works in democratic ways where children practise influence, communication and collaboration. Parent collaboration is ongoing in everyday routines. BarnCompaniet also collaborates with the independent school Fria Emilia; children from the preschool have admission priority.
