About the school

Älvskolan is a village Primary school in Gunnarsbyn, about 40 km from Boden, with around 30 pupils (F–6) and an on-site after-school programme. The school sits in the middle of the village with nature on the doorstep and strong local ties.

There are two buildings: one houses the school restaurant (daily lunch), and the main building includes the school, after-school programme and a co-located preschool. The multi-arena is the hub of the school yard; in winter it becomes an ice rink. Pupils also use the school forest and nearby destinations like Spiken and Storklinten for outdoor learning.

Food and meals

Lunch is home-cooked on site and served daily in the school restaurant building. Outdoor days often include packed meals or grilling over an open fire.

Wellbeing and partnership

A small, family-like setting where “everyone knows everyone” builds safety, belonging and participation. The school collaborates closely with families, local associations and businesses—the village and the school support each other.

Pedagogy and approach

Profile: health and environment. Teaching follows the national curriculum with cross-curricular, mixed-age work, indoors and outdoors, in small groups and whole-school activities. Traditions, seasons and key days are highlighted across the year. Nature, movement and creativity are frequent features of lessons and theme days.

Pre-primary class

Small groups provide a personal, calm start. Social skills (cooperation, conflict resolution, empathy) are central.

  • Language: play-based phonological work (e.g., Bornholm activities), progressing from letters to reading simple words/books; frequent read-aloud; pupils write their own simple “books”.
  • Mathematics: practical focus with sorting, patterns and number sense; daily class meeting covers schedule, date and time.
  • World & technology: hands-on exploration first, then workbook consolidation; early programming.
Close collaboration with Years 1–3 makes the transition to Year 1 smooth and natural.

After-school programme

One mixed-age unit for pupils in F–6. Activities blend guided and free play, indoors and outdoors: movement in the sports hall, cooperation and ball games, school-yard activities, trips to the forest, and winter skiing/skating and snow play when conditions allow.

Breakfast before school and a snack after school. Weeks 27–31: closed; pupils who qualify are referred to municipal summer provision in central Boden (information sent in spring term).
