About the school
Harads skola is a small and welcoming school in the village of Harads, about 50 km northwest of Boden. The school has around 55 pupils in Years F–6 and also houses an after-school unit.
The school is spread across three buildings:
- The main building with classrooms, pre-primary, after-school unit, library and specialist rooms for crafts, music, art, science and home economics.
- The school restaurant in a separate building.
- A separate building with sports hall and swimming pool.
The location offers a rich outdoor environment, including a school forest with shelter and fireplace, nearby trails, the Lule River and the area Ramdal.
Teaching follows the national curriculum (Lgr22) and is adapted by year, subject, interest and season. A multicultural environment is seen as a strength, where pupils learn from each other and everyone is included.
Food and meals
Meals are cooked and served in the school restaurant on site.
Safety and cooperation
At Harads skola, safety and inclusiveness are prioritised. Pupils, staff and guardians work together to ensure wellbeing and study peace. The small scale means everyone knows each other, which creates a sense of security and trust.
The school cooperates with local associations, companies and families in the village. Community and mutual support are described as part of the “near-life” that characterises Harads.
Pedagogy and approach
Teaching is based on the national curriculum and adapted to small groups. Outdoor learning is a natural part of the pedagogy, with frequent lessons in the school forest, by the river and in nearby nature.
Key methods include:
- Language development through reading aloud, phonics and writing (such as “Writing to Read” approach).
- Practical mathematics, with sorting, patterns, numbers and time in everyday contexts.
- Cross-age cooperation, with pupils in mixed groups for activities, projects and theme days.
- Tailored learning, with scope to adapt to each pupil’s needs and interests.
Pre-primary class
The pre-primary class provides a gentle start to school life in a small and safe group. Pupils practise social skills such as cooperation, problem solving and empathy.
Activities include:
- Language: phonics, rhymes and stories progressing towards early reading and writing.
- Mathematics: practical tasks with patterns, sorting and numbers.
- Nature as a classroom: daily outdoor time, often in the school forest, by the river or in the surrounding hills.
- Creativity and play: drama, drawing, music and building.
The close cooperation with Years 1–3 makes the transition to primary smooth and natural.
After-school programme
The after-school unit complements the school day with both free play and structured activities. It is age-mixed and linked to the school’s profile of diversity, variation and community.
Content includes:
- Outdoor play in the school yard, school forest and sports hall.
- Seasonal activities like skiing, skating and snow building.
- Sports, games and creative activities both free and teacher-led.
Breakfast is served before school, and a snack after school. Closed during weeks 27–31; children are then referred to summer care in Boden if guardians work or study.
