About the school

Fria Emilia is run as a member-owned economic association without profit interest. Parents and staff are members, making the school a shared responsibility. The school offers Primary and Lower secondary education (F–9) and an integrated after-school programme. About 120 children aged 6–12 attend the after-school programme.
The school is located in central Boden, close to nature, ski tracks and Pagla ski centre. High staff-to-pupil ratios (around 1 adult per 6 children) and qualified teachers ensure quality.

Food and meals

Meals are served in the Bistro, which prepares food from scratch in the school’s own kitchen. At least two options are served daily, one always vegetarian, along with a salad buffet and fresh fruit. Guardians visiting the school are welcome to join lunch. Special diets are available with medical certificate.

Wellbeing and partnership

Fria Emilia rests on democratic values. Pupils learn to listen to their own voices, respect others and take part in decision-making. Parents are actively involved through membership, work evenings and participation in school development.

Pedagogy and approach

The school is inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy, where pupils are seen as competent, curious and capable of learning through exploration and collaboration.
Key values:

  • Subjectivity: each child’s unique voice and experience is respected.
  • Difference: diversity is seen as a value.
  • Negotiation: pupils share experiences and challenge each other’s ideas.
  • Collective learning: learning is non-linear, creative and based on interaction.

Teaching follows Lgr22 and combines creativity, exploration and reflection. Pedagogical documentation is used to make pupils’ thoughts visible.

Pre-primary class

The pre-primary year is integrated into the whole school community. Pupils explore language, mathematics, creativity and movement in an environment that values reflection, cooperation and outdoor learning. The transition to Year 1 is natural and supported.

After-school programme

The after-school programme (F–6) complements the school day. It emphasises meaningful leisure time with influence and participation, social interaction and creativity. Activities are both guided and free, indoors and outdoors.
