Important information

The school has been demolished and a new school is being built in Unbyn. During the construction period, children from Unbyn attend other schools in Boden Municipality.

About the school

Unbyn School is located about 15 km outside Boden, beautifully situated by the Lule River. Around F–6 pupils attend here, together with an after-school unit, woodwork and music rooms. Lunch is cooked on site by the school’s own chef.

The school is divided into two buildings: the main school and “Kilen”, which houses the sports hall. The nearby area offers great excursion opportunities, including a lit trail, Lillberget and the village football field “Sporn” by the river—with a grill area and small swimming spot.

Food and meals

Meals are prepared on site. Pupils are served hot school lunch daily, with options for dietary needs.

Wellbeing and partnership

The small size creates familiarity and safety: everyone knows each other. The school collaborates closely with parents, local associations and businesses. The community values the school, and the school values the community—what we call “nearby life”.

Pedagogy and approach

Teaching follows the national curriculum and takes advantage of the small-school setting. Lessons are both indoors and outdoors, with mixed ages and theme days.

Culture, movement and creativity are central. Staff competence is broad, and all work together to give pupils the best possible opportunities to learn and thrive.

Pre-primary class

A small group means a personal, safe start. The pre-primary class works closely with Years 1–2, making the step to Year 1 natural.

  • Social skills: cooperation, empathy and conflict resolution.
  • Language: phonics and word play, progressing to reading simple words/books; frequent read-aloud.
  • Mathematics: practical focus—sorting, patterns, numbers, time.
  • Outdoor learning: daily time outside, often in nature.
Learning is tailored to each child’s needs and interests.

After-school programme

The after-school unit has one mixed-age group. Activities are both free and guided, indoors and outdoors, with frequent use of the sports hall and nature. Pupils take part in games, sports, forest exploration, seasonal activities like skiing, skating and snow play.

Breakfast is served before school and a snack after school. Closed weeks 27–31; pupils whose guardians work are referred to summer after-school care in Boden.
