Your route into preschool and school

All newly arrived children and young people in Boden are registered and assessed at the Central Reception for Newly Arrived before placement in preschool or school.

The unit coordinates mother tongue tuition and study guidance. It also supports schools with coaching, staff training, and interpreting and translation services. The team includes mother tongue teachers and assessment teachers.

How the initial assessment works

The educational assessment maps previous schooling, knowledge and strengths. The results are used to plan the pupil’s continued teaching.

Mother tongue tuition

Pupils with a language other than Swedish may receive mother tongue tuition when the language is used daily at home and the pupil has basic knowledge. The head teacher decides. A suitable teacher must be available and, as a rule, there must be at least five pupils in the same language. Adopted children may be eligible even if the language is not used daily at home.

Pupils who study national minority languages (Sami, Finnish, Meänkieli, Romani Chib, Yiddish) have extended rights: no five-pupil requirement and the language does not need to be a daily home language. Tuition can be given as a first or second language.

Teaching may take place after the school day, sometimes at another school or remotely. In compulsory school it can be part of the language option or provided outside the timetable. Grades are awarded from Year 6 and can be counted in applications to upper secondary school. A pupil normally studies one mother tongue.

Study guidance

Study guidance is provided for pupils who cannot yet follow teaching in Swedish. A study guide supports the pupil on site or through remote teaching so the pupil can reach the knowledge requirements.

The Swedish school system

There are several school forms and study pathways from preschool to upper secondary school and beyond. General information is available in multiple languages.
