National sports training (NIU) and sports as an individual choice

At Björknäsgymnasiet you can combine your upper secondary studies with a focus on sports – either through a nationally approved sports programme (NIU) or by choosing sports as an individual course.

Nationell idrottsutbildning (NIU)

National sports training (NIU)
At NIU you combine an upper secondary programme with elite training in handball or biathlon. Selection is made by the respective sports federation. Once admitted to NIU, you apply to your school programme as usual through the admissions system.

Courses included in NIU:

  • Special sports level 1 – 200 credits
  • Special sports level 2 – 100 credits
  • Training and competition theory level 1 – 100 credits

Programmes that can be combined with NIU:
Construction and civil engineering programme, Business and economics programme, Electrical engineering programme, Natural sciences programme, Social sciences programme, Technology programme, Health and social care programme.

Combine studies with elite training. The school is certified by the Swedish Handball Federation and offers three NIU lessons per week.

  • Courses: Special sports 1 and 2 (300 credits), Training and competition theory 1 (100 credits) – total 400 credits
  • Can be combined with: Construction and civil engineering, Business and economics, Electrical engineering, Natural sciences, Social sciences, Technology, Health and social care
  • Application: Through the Swedish Handball Federation’s website, then through the school admissions system.

Schedule:
09:30–09:50 – Information session
09:50–11:20 – Handball training
11:50–12:50 – Lunch (students will eat at Björknäsgymnasiet)
13:00–14:00 – Conditioning/fitness training (indoors)
14:00 – End of session

Sports as an individual choice

If you compete actively in riding, ice hockey, or football, you can take sports as an individual choice. All programmes can be combined with sports from year 2–3. At programmes that also offer NIU, you may sometimes start already in year 1.

Courses included:

  • Competitive sports level 1 – 100 credits
  • Competitive sports level 2 – 100 credits

Choose football as an individual subject and combine it with studies.

  • Start from year 1 in: Construction and civil engineering, Business and economics, Electrical engineering, Natural sciences, Social sciences, Technology, Health and social care
  • Courses: Competitive sports 1 and 2 (100 + 100 credits)

Choose ice hockey as an individual subject if you are an active competitor.

  • Start from year 1 in: Construction and civil engineering, Business and economics, Electrical engineering, Natural sciences, Social sciences, Technology, Health and social care
  • From year 2: Possible in all programmes
  • Courses: Competitive sports 1 and 2 (100 + 100 credits)

In cooperation with Boden Riding Club – for students who actively compete in equestrian sports.

  • Start from year 1 in: Construction and civil engineering, Business and economics, Electrical engineering, Natural sciences, Social sciences, Technology, Health and social care
  • From year 2: Possible in all programmes
  • Courses: Competitive sports 1 and 2 (100 + 100 credits)

In collaboration with BBK Handboll and Boden Handboll IF for students who compete actively.

  • Start from year 1 in: Building and Construction, Economics, Electricity and Energy, Natural Science, Social Science, Technology, Health and Social Care
  • From Year 2: Available in all programmes
  • Courses: Competitive Sports 1 and 2 (100 credits + 100 credits)

Support and development

Whether you choose NIU or sports as an individual option, the goal is that you develop both as an athlete and as a student. You will get support to combine training, competition, and studies.

Application

  • NIU: Selection is made through the sports federation. After that, apply for your school programme through the admissions system.
  • Individual choice: You register your interest when you choose individual courses during your studies.

Can I take NIU in all programmes?
No, only in the seven programmes linked to NIU.

Can I combine any sport with upper secondary studies?
Yes, as an individual choice – but you must be an active competitive athlete.

Will I get support to manage both training and school?
Yes, the system is designed so that you can succeed in both sports and studies.
