Step-by-step guide
Please note that all forms and digital applications (e-services) are currently in Swedish. Contact Citizen Service if you need help in English.
1. Upper secondary school choice
Björknäsgymnasiet is part of a local upper secondary school cooperation. This means that if you are registered in Boden, Luleå, Piteå or Älvsbyn, you can apply to upper secondary schools in all four municipalities. Applications are made through a joint admission system.
For the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme, special application procedures apply via the admission office.
2. How to apply
If you are currently attending compulsory school, you will receive login details for the admission system from your school. Other applicants should contact their home municipality’s admission office to receive login credentials.
Once logged in, you choose your upper secondary programmes and rank them in the order you prefer. It is important that your first choice is placed at the top of the list.
Applications must be submitted by the deadline stated in the year’s admission schedule, which is set by the local cooperation and may vary slightly each year.
3. Timeline
The application period for upper secondary school opens in mid-January and closes in mid-February. You apply through the joint admission system.
- Application opens: mid-January
- Last day to apply: mid-February
- Preliminary admission: April (based on autumn term grades)
- Re-application period: mid-April to mid-May
- Final admission: June (based on final grades)
- Reserve admission: from July until the start of school, subject to available places
Exact dates are published by the admission office, and it is important to stay updated throughout the process.
4. Selection and admission
Admission is primarily based on your merit value from compulsory school. For certain programmes, entrance tests or other criteria may also be part of the selection process. If you have special circumstances, such as illness that affected your grades, there may be an opportunity for special consideration.
5. If you are not admitted immediately
If you are not admitted to your first choice, your other choices will be considered in order. If you are not admitted to any of your choices, you will automatically be placed on a waiting list.
Once final admission results are published, it is important that you actively accept the place you have been offered via the admission portal. If you do not accept within the given time, you risk losing your place.
During reserve admission, you may be offered a new place. You must also accept this within the given time to keep it. Check your messages and log in to the admission system regularly during the summer.
6. Before making your upper secondary choice
- Talk to your study and career counsellor if you are unsure which choices suit you.
- Visit open house events at schools if possible.
- Think carefully about your priorities and ranking.
- Keep track of the timeline and important dates.
7. After you have been admitted
Once you have been offered a place, the school will provide an introduction and support to help you get started. The student health team is available to support your studies, health and wellbeing.
At Björknäsgymnasiet, some programmes also offer the possibility to combine studies with sports education.
