Apply for school transport

Your child in preschool class, compulsory school or adapted compulsory and upper secondary school may be entitled to free school transport if the child is registered in Boden Municipality and attends the school assigned by the municipality.

Updated:

Please note that all forms and digital applications (e-services) are currently in Swedish. Contact Citizen Service if you need help in English.

1. Is your child eligible for school transport?

The right to school transport applies between the child’s registered home address and the school assigned by the municipality based on that address. Each case is assessed individually. The need must be long-term.

School transport may be granted if there is a need due to:

  • distance to school
  • traffic conditions
  • disability
  • other special circumstances

1.1 Distance to school

School transport is granted if the distance between the registered home address and the assigned school exceeds:

  • 2 km for preschool class to Year 3
  • 3 km for Years 4–6
  • 5 km for Years 7–9
  • 6 km for adapted upper secondary school

The distance is measured using the Swedish Transport Administration’s road network. The shortest route to school is used.

1.2 Traffic conditions

School transport may be granted even if the distance is shorter. This applies if the route to school is considered unsafe.

The municipality makes an overall assessment of the traffic conditions. This includes factors such as road design, traffic volume, the child’s age and your responsibility for supervision.

1.3 Disability or other special reasons

Your child may be granted school transport regardless of distance if a disability affects their ability to travel safely between home and school.

You must attach a certificate from healthcare services or the school health service.

If your child has special needs, the school transport can be adapted. This may include:

  • pick-up close to the home
  • a specially adapted vehicle
  • assistive equipment

Adaptations are based on the child’s needs and are decided as part of the assessment.

1.4 If your child attends another school

If your child attends a school other than the one assigned by the municipality, school transport is only granted if it can be arranged without financial or organisational difficulties for the municipality.

2. When is school transport not provided?

School transport is not provided for:

travel to or from after-school care

travel to or from short-term accommodation

travel during the school day, for example study visits or work placements

needs shorter than 12 weeks

In these cases, you are responsible for transport.

If the need is temporary, it is not handled within the school transport service. You can instead contact your insurance company or the municipality’s student insurance.

3. Shared custody

Your child may be granted school transport from two addresses if:

both addresses are within Boden Municipality

one address is within the catchment area of the assigned school

the living arrangement is fixed and evenly shared

You must apply for each new school year.

4. How the transport works

School transport takes place between a location near the child’s home and the school. Planning is based on the school’s start and end times for each year group. It is normally not adapted to individual timetables.

Your child may be directed to a bus stop or pick-up/drop-off point.

Journeys are coordinated with other students. This may involve:

  • changing vehicles
  • detours
  • waiting time

Waiting time is normally up to 30 minutes for children attending their assigned school. In exceptional cases, it may be longer. On the return journey, the child should be able to wait indoors.

4.1 Your responsibility during the journey

You are responsible for your child before and after the journey and during waiting time. Your child must wear a seatbelt and follow the driver’s instructions. Rules of conduct apply throughout the journey.

5. How to apply

  • You must apply for each new school year.
  • Applications can be submitted from April.
  • To guarantee processing before the start of the autumn term, your application must be submitted by 30 April.
  • You apply in the municipality where you are registered.
  • Your application must be complete and include all required information, certificates and, where relevant, schedules.

5.1 Before you apply

The guidelines for school transport contain all applicable rules. Decisions are based on these guidelines.

We recommend that you read the full document before applying. By submitting your application, you confirm that you have read the guidelines.

5.2 Apply via e-service

5.3 Apply using a form

If you cannot use the e-service with BankID, you can apply using a form.

Send the form:

  • by email (scanned) to: skolskjuts@boden.se
  • by post to: Boden Municipality, SE-961 86 Boden. Mark the envelope: “Skolskjuts”

The form "Intyg om behov av skolskjuts" is voluntary to use. It can be used as a guide to show what information is needed when applying for school transport due to a disability.

6. Processing and decision

Processing during the school year usually takes 2–3 weeks.

Decisions are time-limited. The period of validity is stated in the decision.

If the conditions change, the decision will no longer apply. You must inform the municipality of any changes.

If school transport cannot be carried out, you are responsible for your child’s travel. No compensation is provided.

6.1 If you are not satisfied with the decision

You can appeal a decision regarding school transport.

Decisions can be appealed through administrative appeal or legal review, depending on the case. Information on how to appeal and the time limits will be included in the decision sent to you.
