1. SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT – THE WHOLE PICTURE

Sustainable development means meeting today’s needs without compromising the opportunities of future generations.
In Boden Municipality, this means that three perspectives must always interact:

  • Social sustainability
  • Ecological sustainability
  • Economic sustainability

The three parts are interdependent – if one fails, the whole system is affected.

2. SOCIAL SUSTAINABILITY

2.1 What is it?

Creating safe, inclusive, and equal communities where all people have the opportunity to participate and influence.
Promoting health, education, participation, and gender equality.

2.2 Examples in Boden:

  • Public consultations in different neighborhoods.
  • Initiatives for safer public spaces.
  • Projects such as the Boden Sustainability Center focusing on gender equality and inclusion.

2.3 Why is it important?

'Without social cohesion and participation, neither climate transition nor economic development will be sustainable in the long run. Everyone must have the chance to be part of the transition.

3. ECOLOGICAL SUSTAINABILITY

3.1 What is it?

Using natural resources in ways that do not harm ecosystems or the climate.
Protecting biodiversity, reducing emissions, and managing energy and materials efficiently.

3.2 Examples in Boden:

  • Climate and adaptation plan addressing climate change.
  • Expansion of pedestrian and bicycle paths for sustainable travel.
  • Annual Sustainability Week with focus on #thesmartgreen.

3.3 Why is it important?

A stable environment and a functioning climate are the foundation of all life – without them, neither society nor the economy can work.

4. ECONOMIC SUSTAINABILITY

4.1 What is it?

Building a long-term strong and stable economy without depleting resources or creating major social and environmental costs.
Investing in innovation, education, and sustainable businesses.

4.2 Examples in Boden:

  • Green industrial investments at Boden Industrial Park.
  • Collaboration between the municipality, businesses, and education providers to create more jobs.
  • EU-funded projects for sustainable mobility.

4.3 Why is it important?

Economic strength creates the conditions to invest in environmental protection, social initiatives, and a resilient future.

5. WHY DO WE WORK WITH ALL THREE?

  • No dimension works on its own. A strong economy without environmental care harms the planet. A green transition without social justice creates inequality. Social security without economic stability risks being short-lived.
  • The UN’s Agenda 2030 and its 17 Global Goals provide a shared roadmap for municipalities, businesses, and citizens worldwide.
  • By addressing social, ecological, and economic sustainability together, we are building a smarter, greener, and fairer Boden – today and for the future.
