Step-by-step guide

1. What is GIS?
GIS stands for Geographic Information System and is a digital tool where maps are combined with information.
In Boden’s GIS services you can:
- Search for addresses and properties.
- Turn on different map layers with information.
- Measure distances and areas.
- Draw and save your own maps.
- View the municipality’s planned projects.
- Access facts that support building permits, planning, and leisure activities.
2. How to use the interactive web map
2.1 Open the map
Go to GIS-map Boden.
2.2 Navigate
- Zoom in/out with the mouse wheel or plus/minus buttons.
- Drag the map to move around.
2.3 Turn on map layers
- Click the layer list (stacked squares).
- Select what you want to view, such as playgrounds, service points, or nature reserves.
2.4 See legend
Click on the legend to understand the map symbols.
2.5 Measure and draw
- Use the measurement tool to calculate distances or areas.
- Use the drawing tool to mark locations, draw lines, or add text.
2.6 Change background map
Click the background map icon and select between aerial photo, base map, or national map.
2.7 Save and share
- Click “Print” to create a PDF or image of the map.
- Use the “Share” function to send a link.
3. More of the municipality’s map services
3.1 Control network map
- Shows the municipality’s elevation benchmarks and the Swedish Mapping Authority’s control network in SWEREF 99 / RH 2000.
- Used for precise measurements and construction work.
3.2 Solar map
- Shows how much solar radiation different roof surfaces receive during the year.
- Helps you determine if your roof is suitable for solar panels.
- Click on your building in the map to see the values.
3.3 Historical orthophotos
- Shows how the built environment has changed over time.
- Compare today’s landscape with aerial photos from the late 1950s.
- Provides insight into how towns and areas have developed.
4. Examples of what you can do as a resident
- Find the nearest playground or swimming spot.
- Check the zoning plan for your property.
- Measure the distance to school, work, or leisure activities.
- Draw a planned walking or cycling route.
- Check the solar potential of your roof before installing solar panels.
