Who Can Get National Special Transport
If your disability makes a trip more expensive than normal, you can apply for National Special Transport. The municipality covers the additional cost caused by your disability, while you pay a personal fee.
This service is only for personal travel such as leisure, recreation, or visiting family and friends. It is not available for work, education, or medical trips.
Approval can be for a single trip or for a specific period.
How to Apply
You apply through the municipality where you are registered:
- Use the online service, call, or send an email.
- Apply at least three weeks before your trip.
- For Christmas and New Year travel, apply no later than November 30.
Travel Options
National Special Transport applies to travel within Sweden, from one municipality to another.
The decision specifies the means of transport you can use. Bus or train is prioritized and the least expensive suitable option will always be chosen.
The service does not apply if regular local special transport can be used instead.
Traveling with Assistance
If you need help during the trip, you can bring an assistant. The municipality covers the entire cost for the assistant.
If you only need help at the destination, you can bring a companion. The companion pays the same personal fee as you.
Costs
You pay a personal fee for each trip. The minimum fee is 105 Swedish kronor.
Children normally travel with an adult. If the child’s disability requires more expensive travel, the child can be granted National Special Transport.
Canceling a Trip
Always notify the booking service if you need to cancel.
- For taxis or special vehicles, cancellation must be made on time or you may have to pay the cost.
- Unused tickets must be returned. Sleeper car or reserved seats on trains must always be canceled.
- Special rules apply for flights—contact your municipal case officer for details.
