How we handle snow removal
The Technical Department is responsible for snow removal and ice control on municipal roads as well as pedestrian and bicycle paths. The Swedish Transport Administration manages some major roads, such as Route 97, Lulevägen, and Garnisonsgatan.
After each snowfall, the main roads and pedestrian or bicycle routes are cleared first. Smaller roads are cleared afterward. If the surface becomes uneven, ice scraping is done, and driveways are cleared at the same time. Residential streets are scraped once per year before the spring thaw.
When snow removal starts
- Level 1: Pedestrian and cycle paths are ploughed at a depth of 4–10 cm.
- Level 2: Priority roads and pedestrian and cycle paths are ploughed at a depth of 4–10 cm.
- Level 3: Other streets are ploughed at a depth of 10–15 cm.
Your responsibility as a property owner
You can help keep roads clear and safe:
- Place mailboxes so the entire road can be cleared and mail delivered safely.
- Keep snow from your property on your own land, not on roads or neighboring properties.
- Mark low fences, bushes, or other objects that may be hidden when snow depth increases.
- Trim trees and bushes that hang over the street.
- Always park within your property boundaries during snowfall. Vehicles and bicycles obstructing snow removal may be relocated, and snow clearing may be omitted if improperly parked vehicles block access.
- Remove snow and icicles from roofs to prevent injury from falling debris.
Tips for a safe winter
- Put winter tires on your car before icy weather arrives.
- Use a helmet and studded tires when cycling in winter.
- Keep an ice scraper in your car and sand at home for slippery sidewalks.
- Follow parking bans and alternate-side parking rules.
- Stay updated on weather alerts and follow recommendations.
Damage during snow removal
Snow clearing equipment may sometimes cause damage to fences, mailboxes, or hedges. Report any damage via the municipality’s online service. Damage to incorrectly placed mailboxes will not be compensated.
