Support from the municipality

A disability can be physical, neuropsychiatric, or intellectual. Many people have more than one. Support can be provided under the Swedish Act concerning Support and Service for Persons with Certain Disabilities or under the Swedish Social Services Act. All support is based on your individual needs and is assessed by a case officer in the field of support and service.

Personal assistance

Personal assistance is individually designed support in everyday life. The goal is for you to live as independently as possible and to have influence over when and how the help is given. You can receive assistance from the municipality or choose financial support and arrange the assistance yourself.

You and the responsible manager plan how your approved hours will be used. You review needs, expectations, and what is included. The planning becomes an implementation plan that the assistants follow.

The municipality recruits, employs, and sets the pay for the assistants. You can influence who is hired if the requirements are met. All new employees present an extract from the criminal records register. The municipality is responsible for a good work environment and for necessary assistive devices.

If the decision includes sleeping on call, you must provide a separate room for the assistant. Driving a car is not normally included but can be regulated in a special agreement if needed. Assistive devices are prescribed after an assessment by an occupational therapist or the municipal home health care.

The municipality reimburses reasonable costs for personal assistance. The reimbursement normally consists of at least eighty-seven percent for wages and payroll costs, up to eight percent for administrative costs, and up to five percent for other costs. If documentation of the actual costs is missing, an hourly amount decided annually is paid (example: two hundred and sixty-three kronor per hour).

You have the right to access all documentation about your support. Time reports must be approved and submitted according to current routines.

Needs can change over time. Contact your case officer if you need to increase or reduce the support. Inform the responsible manager in good time in case of travel, breaks, or a change of coordinator. The notice period is three months, in writing, unless otherwise agreed.

First raise questions directly with your personal assistant. If you cannot resolve the issue together, contact the responsible manager. You can submit feedback on how the support is working.

Other forms of support under LSS for Persons with Certain Disabilities

Respite care relieves parents or spouses who live with someone with extensive disabilities. The support is usually given in the home and is adapted to the needs. The aim is to give relatives time for rest and their own activities.

Companion service makes it easier to take part in community life. You can get support to go for walks, visit friends, or take part in leisure activities. The aim is to break isolation and increase participation.

A contact person is a fellow human being who supports you to increase social contacts, participation, and independence. The assignment is flexible and adapted to needs. The support can be granted under the Swedish Social Services Act or under the Swedish Act concerning Support and Service for Persons with Certain Disabilities.

A host family welcomes a child into their home for short, regular periods, often weekends. The aim is to give the child security and to give the family relief. You must be over eighteen years of age, have a stable life situation, and complete an assessment to become a host family.

Asterix is the municipality’s leisure activity for young people from thirteen to twenty-three years of age who have a disability. The activity is available before and after school and during school holidays. The goal is a meaningful leisure time and preparation for adult life.

Omega is a short-term residence in Erikslund. The individual gets a change of environment, recreation, and opportunities for development. Relatives receive relief at the same time. The activity cooperates with school and leisure services to meet the child’s needs.
