This is family law
Family law concerns children’s rights and parents’ responsibilities. The goal is safe, sustainable solutions for the child’s everyday life. We primarily work through consensus and agreements.
This is what family law means in practice:
- The child’s best interests first. Children must be heard in a way suited to their age and maturity.
- Guided by Swedish law. The work is based on the Swedish Parental Code and the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
- Solutions by agreement. You receive support to reach agreements for the child’s daily life.
- Agreements can become legally binding. When the municipality approves an agreement on custody, residence, or contact, it is valid like a court judgment.
- Investigation when needed. If you cannot agree, the court may request an investigation from the Family Law Unit.
- Neutral, safe, and confidential. All parties are treated impartially and information is protected under confidentiality rules.
What you can get help with
These areas have their own subpages with more information.
Custody, residence, and contact
Support to agree on responsibilities, decisions, and the child’s everyday life. Possibility to make legally binding agreements or take part in an investigation if requested by the court.
Parenthood and paternity
Support to establish legal parenthood or paternity through acknowledgement or investigation. The child has a right to both parents.
Adoption
Information and support before and after adoption. The Family Law Unit conducts assessments and provides documentation for decisions, with the child’s best interests as the starting point.
How the process works
You contact the Family Law Unit. We offer advice and, if needed, cooperation talks. If you reach agreement, you can sign an agreement. If you do not agree, the court may request an investigation.
Confidentiality and fees
Information is protected by confidentiality. Advice, cooperation talks, and agreements are usually free of charge. If any fees may apply, we inform you before the case begins.
