Adoption

Adoption means welcoming a child as your own. The child receives the same rights as a biological child, and an adoption cannot be revoked.

Please note that all forms, digital applications (e-services) and some linked websites are currently in Swedish. Contact Citizen Service if you need help in English.

What adoption means

Adoption gives the child the same legal rights, such as inheritance and child maintenance, and affects the child’s name and nationality. The decision is final and cannot be annulled.

Who can apply

You must be at least eighteen years old. You may apply as a married couple, registered partners, cohabiting partners, or as a single applicant.

Intercountry adoption

Preparation and training

Contact the Family Law Unit for information about the mandatory pre-adoption parent preparation course and the adoption process. After the course, if you choose to apply for approval to adopt, an assessment begins.

Assessment for approval (home study)

In the assessment you describe why you wish to adopt and your thoughts about adopting a child who has habitual residence in another country. The assessment also covers your background and current circumstances.

Checks are made in social services and police registers, and you must submit a medical certificate describing your health.

Decision and oversight

The Social Welfare Committee’s Working Committee makes the decision based on the assessment. The assessment also serves as a presentation of the prospective adoptive parent(s) to the child’s country of origin.

The Swedish Authority for Family Law and Parental Support oversees and supervises Swedish adoption organisations.

Adoption organisation and referral

You contact an authorised adoption organisation, which manages contact with the country of origin. When you receive a child referral from the organisation, contact your case officer at the Family Law Unit. The unit will verify that circumstances are unchanged and that the process can proceed.

The role of the Family Law Unit

The Family Law Unit safeguards the child’s interests throughout the process and assesses whether the adoption is in the child’s best interests.

Nationell adoption

Om du vill adoptera din partners barn ansöker du hos tingsrätten. Innan tingsrätten beslutar får familjerätten i uppdrag att utreda och bedöma om adoptionen är till barnets bästa.
