Support from social services

All children have the right to feel well, have close relationships with their parents, have friends, and feel included. Social services help children, young people, and families in various situations. Information is available in several languages.

How you can get support

Children and young people can contact social services themselves. If you are under fifteen, both you and your guardian must agree to apply for support.

  • Advice, support, and treatment through outpatient care
  • Contact person
  • Foster home or contact family
  • Treatment home

An investigation is carried out when an application or report is received.

  • Application means that a child or guardian themselves contact social services for support.
  • Report can be made by, for example, preschool, school, healthcare, dental care, police, or relatives if they are concerned about a child.

An initial assessment determines whether an investigation is necessary. The purpose is to find out the support needs together with the child and family. The investigation must be completed within four months, though the time may be extended if there are special reasons. Support can be provided during and after the investigation to ensure the child has the same opportunities as other children.

  • Conversations with the child to get their own view of their situation.
  • Conversations with the parents about parenting, strengths, and challenges.
  • Conversations are adapted to the child’s age and maturity.
  • Contacts with preschool, school, and healthcare to gain a complete picture. Parents participate in these contacts.
  • Network meetings may be arranged to see how relatives and friends can help.
  • The work is based on openness, participation, and continuity with as few contacts as possible.

A social worker compiles the information and makes an assessment. If the child or family needs help, decisions are made about measures that strengthen the family’s own resources. Children and parents are involved in decisions about support.

Group support and support as a relative

Children’s groups

  • Organized regularly and based on need.
  • Meet once per week.
  • Consist of about five to seven children and two facilitators.
  • Built on fellowship, conversation, and play.
  • Themes are adapted to the children’s situation and different forms of vulnerability.
  • Parents of children in the group are offered conversations and support, individually or in groups.

Children’s rights as relatives – conversations for those living close to dependency

Applies to children who have a parent or sibling with problems related to alcohol, drugs, or gambling.

  • Three to five conversations with information, support, and increased ability to act in your own life.
  • Parents or siblings take part in two of the sessions.
  • If more support is needed, social services will provide further help.
  • The conversations are offered as a service and are neither registered nor documented in medical records.
