Legal guardian for unaccompanied children

Children who arrive in Sweden on their own are entitled to a legal guardian who can represent them. The legal guardian supports the child in both personal and financial matters, ensuring that the child receives the help and security needed during the first period in Sweden.

Who is considered an unaccompanied minor?

An unaccompanied minor is a person under 18 years of age who arrives in Sweden without parents or another responsible adult. Children who are left alone during the asylum process are also included.

What does a legal guardian do?

The legal guardian represents the child both as a custodian and guardian in personal and financial matters.
Examples include:

  • Assisting in contact with the Swedish Migration Agency
  • Applying for benefits, such as child allowance or student support
  • Arranging housing and ensuring the child receives healthcare if needed

The legal guardian is not responsible for daily care. The child often lives in a care home or with a foster family.
