Adapting your home

A housing adaptation grant can give you the opportunity to adapt your home so that it works better for your disability.

Updated:

Please note that all forms, digital applications (e-services) and some linked websites are currently in Swedish. Contact Citizen Service if you need help in English.

Who can apply?

You can apply for a housing adaptation grant if you have a long-term or permanent disability. The application can be made by you or by a representative with a power of attorney.

The home must be your permanent residence. Grants cannot be given for holiday homes. Grants are also not approved for homes that are clearly unsuitable from the beginning with regard to the disability.

What can you receive a grant for?

Grants can be given to change fixed functions in the home, meaning things that are not taken with you when you move. Examples include:

  • removing thresholds,
  • installing support handles or railings,
  • replacing a bathtub with a shower,
  • building a ramp or installing a lift,
  • installing automatic door openers,
  • improving fixed lighting in kitchens and bathrooms.

Grants are only given if the measures are necessary for the home to be functional. They are not given if the need can be solved with assistive devices provided by the municipality or the region.

Grants are not given for construction defects, neglected maintenance, or normal housing maintenance.

Applying for housing adaptation

You can apply for housing adaptation through our e-services or with a paper form.

A complete application must include:

  • a certificate from an occupational therapist, physiotherapist or other qualified medical professional,
  • written approval from the property owner if you live in a rental or condominium,
  • a cost estimate or quotation from a contractor.

If you have difficulty obtaining a quotation, the municipality can assist you.

Decision and appeal

When your application is complete, a municipal case officer will review it in accordance with the Act (2018:222) on Housing Adaptation Grants. A home visit may be booked if necessary.

You will always receive a written decision. If your application is rejected, you can appeal in writing within three weeks from the day you received the decision. Appeals are reviewed by the administrative court.

When the grant is approved

Once you have received the decision, you choose a contractor, sign an agreement and pay the invoice. The municipality is never the purchaser or executor.

When the work is completed, you send an invoice copy and your bank details to the municipality. The grant is then paid out. If you cannot pay the invoice yourself, you can authorise the municipality to pay the contractor directly with your approved grant.

Repairs, maintenance and restoration

You own the adapted equipment yourself and are responsible for its maintenance and service. Normal upkeep and repairs are not covered by the grant. In some cases, you can apply for a grant for repair or servicing of equipment financed through the housing adaptation grant.

If the adaptation is no longer needed, the property owner may in some cases apply for a grant to remove a previous adaptation (restoration grant). If you own your home or live in a condominium, you are responsible for the restoration yourself.
